Hachi-Roku - Rebirth of the NA RWD legend (Part 1)

Year 2013 represents a key turning point for Toyota from a global perspective. For almost the longest time, car enthusiasts have kinda forgotten the existence of Toyota and the company's illustrious forays into the motorsports circle during that heydays in the 80's and 90's. From the local Singapore context where majority of the cars experienced a short lifespan of just a decade, each year passed leaving fewer and fewer of Toyotas with motor-sports DNA on the roads. Mentioned the term Starlet, MR2, Celica, Corolla Trueno and I believed most people will look at you with eyes wide open....

Well, at least not to those who have watched the Initial D animes from yore (and I bet some still goes to the local video arcade from time to time to relieve their childhood memories playing those video box). If you happen to be one of those I am talking about, then the term Hachi Roku would be very much familiar to you. You would recall that panda-lookalike vehicle with the retrolicious flipped up head-lamps and boxy rear end that is meant to carry nothing but tofu within. Worshippers of the vehicle would be telling you how it's puny 1.6 power plant would be capable to go up against those cars with bigger hearts. Well, fast forward some 20+ years from the initial iteration of the Hachi Roku, and there you have yet another vehicle with the same name and drivetrain configurations. No.. this new 86 (as what I would like to call) doesn't feature in any comics or Jay Chou's flicks (well not discounting the fact that it wouldn't in the near future), nor does it have a big enough boot space to fit a tray of tofu in its rear. How it gets its 86 monika still seems odd to me... the closest co-relation really is that of the vehicle sporting some 86 insignia on its side fender.

The all-new 86 represents Toyota's effort to bring back a highly tunable yet affordable platform to the world. While the statement "the latest affordable Toyota's sports coupe" applies to most countries where the vehicle is sold in the guise of the FRS, BRZ or GT86, the same cannot be said of Singapore, where the vehicle would set you back a rather uncool S$160k++ just to have it on the road for the next 10 years. To further add salt to wound, the rather friendly government regulation dictates that potential buyers must fork out a princely sum of ~S$80K for the initial down payment. Noting the unfavourable situation, we do have our own enthusiasts who bite the bullet and throw in his/ her cash to own this piece of exclusive machinery (exclusive only in the Singapore context).

With most renowned international tuning brands anticipating the arrival of the 86, it is of no surprise that performance and aesthetic upgrades are made available even before he vehicle reaches the local shore. One of these brands is Toyota Racing Development or Toyota TechnoCraft, better known internationally as TRD. TRD, with its close association to Toyota Motors Corporation in Japan, am one of the forerunners in producing performance parts for the 86, and in Singapore we are kinda lucky to have the performance and aesthetic kit available from local distributor Borneo Motors Singapore.

Upon the arrival of the 1st vehicle, a full TRD aero-kit, together with TRD performance goodies such as the TRD Sports Air Filter, TRD Version R quad-muffler, a fully adjustable TRD suspension system, TRD by Brembo Monoblock brake system and 18" Forged TRD rims were promptly fitted to the vehicle. Some months down the road, more juicy bits were added on and these included the TRD front fender aero fins, TRD Bucket seats, TRD carbon fibre interior bits. A Valenti LED tail lamps further added more sportiness to the exterior.

For the performance enthusiasts craving more than just those mechanical add-ons, a UNICHIP Plug and Play piggyback has been added to give the vehicle more oomph. In this case, the piggyback found its application in an A/T vehicle and after installation, the vehicle was more responsive from move-off (UNICHIP promises improvement to the torque curve using its preset configuration to eliminate the vehicle's flat-spot between the rev-zone of 3K - 4.5K). Given its plug and play nature for the 86, no worries on voiding the factory warranty since everything can be reverted back to factory settings with minimal fuss. Of course, the UNICHIP can be utilized (with their own tuning software) should there be the need for custom tuning to accommodate more hard-core add-ons.

Where car prices in SG limits the take-up numbers of the Toyota 86, the situation differs vastly overseas (both in its Domestic Land of the Rising Sun as well as countries such as the US, Europe & Australia), where the 86 is gaining in popularity especially amongst professional tuning & aerokit companies.

Stay tuned to Part 2 for the next overview of performance & aesthetic creations that have been made available for the 86.

Sales of Vertex D1 Soarer

The legendary drift weapon of Ueno-san of Vertex is up for sales!

The vehicle in mentioned here is that of the JZZ30 Toyota Soarer which have been outfitted with aero products from Vertex to ensure effective aerodynamics and engine cooling. The aggresive visuals of the aerokit suggests a similarity to that of GT500 racing vehicles.

Since this vehicle is created to compete in the D1 Grand Prix previously, a lot of works have obviously gone into both the handling and engine department

Rectification of Driver's Side Power Window Switch in Singapore

Special Service Campaign for POWER WINDOW MASTER SWITCH (BMS)

Official Statement:

Following the announcement made by Toyota Motor Corp in Japan on 10 October 2012, Borneo Motors Singapore will initiate a Special Service Campaign for select Toyota Yaris, Vios, Corolla Altis, Camry and RAV 4 models.
This campaign is to rectify the condition that may cause the drivers’ side Power Window Master Switch to experience “notchy” or “sticking” condition when in use. This is a proactive measure Toyota is taking to ensure attempts to rectify this condition is carried out with Toyota approved method and the appropriate lubricant.

At the moment, we are still pending further clarifications specific to the involved Toyota models distributed and sold by Borneo Motors.

Q1: What is the defect?

The Power Window Master Switch may experience a “notchy” or “sticking” condition when in use.
If commercially available lubricants are applied in an attempt to address this condition, the switch assembly may overheat and melt.

Q2: What is the cause of this condition & concern?

This notchy or sticking condition may be caused by uneven application of grease lubricant at the original supplier of the switch. As such, over time and with frequent usage, the contact points within the switch may deteriorate prematurely, causing the “notchy” or sticking condition when in use.

If owners attempt to use commercially available lubricants, the resin or plastic parts inside the switch may become overheated by ingredients in these lubricants and melt.

Q3: What brand of these commercially available lubricants is likely to cause this condition?

We currently do not have this information.

Q4: Which models and how many vehicles are involved?

In Singapore, the models involved in this campaign are
Camry, Corolla Altis, RAV 4, Vios, Yaris – models produced between February 2006 and April 2009.
Approximately 15,000 units may be involved. However, we are in the midst of verifying the actual involved units locally.

For Singapore, please refer to the Borneo Motors weblink below for information pertaining to this exercise.

The Changing Face (& Business Strategy) of Lexus

Believe it has been some months since the launch of the 'new face' Lexus, whom has incorporated a spindle grille to the front of its vehicle range including the new GS, RX, LS and upcoming ES.
This has increased the overall sports image of the brand, enabling it to attract a younger demographic who craved sportiness and reliability all in one package.

However, here at Slippery Tarmac we shan't delve too much into how the technicalities involving the face change but instead focus on bringing our audience the sporty quinessential of the Lexus brand.
Today, the focus will be on the Lexus IS-C, a coupe version of the reliable IS. From factory, the IS-C doesnt quite stand out from the vehicle crowd on the road, and pales in outlook comparison when compared to the coupe version of the BMW3, Audi A4 and Merc C coupe in my opinion.

Japanese tuner Aimgain has taken the IS-C in stock form, slammed it low to the ground, fit it up with 4 deep-dished 5 spoke rims, and put it on a weight-gainer program and the end product does look rather heavenly! Taking note that the Aimgain IS-C still retains its original grille (not the new spindle ones). What's your take?

Well, in terms of output wise, I'm not exactly sure what kind of firepower it is putting to the tarmac. A stock ISC with a 2.5L heart outputs a considerably hearty 205 horses. When compared to this particular ISC driven by Daigo Saito in this year's Formula Drift Asia, let's just say that the rear tires on this particular ISC gets worn out almost 6 times faster (do the maths and u get 1200)!

Toyota 86 Internal Launch @ Changi Exhibition Center

It was with much fanfare with the arrival of the 86 in local SG shore. Finally for quite a long while rather, Toyota has come up with something more exciting than its usual bread-and-butter vehicles. For someone like us working in Toyota Singapore, being amongst the first people to be able to test drive the new 86 is certainly an interesting proposition to look forward to during the day.

There was more to the anticipated test drive of the 86 that morning. I had been tasked to pick up the venerable Lexus ISF from the west and drive it all the way to the Exhibition grounds for display as well as for sometime around the makeshift track meant for the 86. That's my caffeine for the day start!

Arriving at the entrance to the Exhibition ground, it was there that I had that short few seconds to truly open up the lungs of the ISF after the 1st road hump. Acceleration was brutal after the initial 0.5 second of lag after flooring the pedal, even with 5 pax onboard. Well the joy was literally short-lived as I had to use the retard pedal after hitting that 200 on the speedo. My passengers appear.....alright though.

As we had arrived much earlier that morning, we had some time around the makeshift track to test out another of our in-house vehicle, a humble Toyota Vios NCP93R decked out in TRD liverage and of course, with a slew of TRD bolt-on parts such as the 17' TRD rims, TRD Sports Suspensions, TRD 3-puck Sports clutch, TRD Sports Air Filter and a TRD-Sparco seat with TAKATA harness to match. Gripping the tarmac are a set of 4 sticky Yokohama AD08 tires, known for their superb dry grip ability. No wonder the car feels like it is on rail when we take it through the slalom course and the makeshift chicanes!

Finally it was time to head into the Conference Room for the 86 Internal Launch. Display inside the Room are 2 86 - one fully kitted with TRD parts and the other one bone-stock from factory...

With the conclusion of the 86 video presentation and the speech from the PIC, it was time for the higllight of the day - the 86 test drive. Here we have our local and Msia drift drivers in Ivan Lim and Ariff to advise the participants on the handling of the cars in the circuit. Taking the 86 out into the slalom and circuit further exemplify the outstanding handling characteristics of the vehicles. The time on the vehicle for each participant, was too limited to fully exploit the better characteristics of the car. Nonetheless, that's possibly one of the few times where we have the opportunity to drive in the 86, for the S$180K price tag on the 86 in Singapore puts the car way above its original intended purpose of 'a cheap affordable sports car'.

Well if you do have at least S$180K to splurge and you happen to be looking for a car with a sporty outlook, sits 2 comfortably, drives well and generally turn eyes wherever it goes, this could be the car within your search radar. Of course, there happen to be quite a few other European consideration (albeit with a higher engine output) within that price segment, but when you are talking about a rear-wheel drive vehicle with a built-to-drift potential and loads of aftermarket options on-hand, there's few that can rival the 86....
