ABT Cup 2011_24th March 2011, 7 - 11pm

Finally after a long absence from karting I finally have the opportunity to be given a revival dose of karting adrenaline, in the form of an endurance night race at Kartright Speedway. The event was the inaugural ABT Cup 2011, with the main organizers being ABT and Autovox.

A total of 10 Teams, comprising of both vendors and media, were invited to take part in the race this year and thankfully I was invited to kart with Team 8Flo, a up and coming Media Company in Singapore. Basically our team went in as one of the underdogs in this friendly competition as the organizers teams ABT, Audi SG and their VIPs fielded some pretty fast karters.

Not wanting to let ourselves done, our team performed relatively well in the qualifying, taking 5th place on the starting grid. Kart #6 was our accompanying kart for the individual practice and qualifying round and the kart was not exactly handling very well as the kart was rather twitchy to our braking inputs.

After the Qualifying, another draw was made and this time, we managed to draw Kart #7. The kart proved to be more well-balanced in the handling department and all of us were clocking better timings than we were previously. We progressed from the 5th place on the grid to 3rd place after the starting 1st lap before an held out and a corrective mistake by our first driver allow 3 other teams to overtake us. For the rest of the first 8 minutes, we were running at 6th place. On came the changeover to the 2nd driver and our position progressed from 6th to the 3rd place at the end of 2nd segment. Our 3rd driver held on our 3rd place podium position for pretty much the whole time he was on the track and this put us on the road to a podium finish for our Team's maiden race. Our last driver, being the fastest driver amongst all of us, did well to put up a great display with his karting finess, even holding the fastest lap record for two laps during his stint on the track. on the last lap out we were only 2.09s behind the 2nd place Team and we managed to overtake them after the final turn. This placed Team 8Flo in 2nd position for the night!

After the Race!

8Flo Team: Max (myself), Joel, Nicholas, Gautham

Each participant receive a Cert of Participation in the end

And the Podium Finishers! From left to Right:
Team VIP (Far Left), Team Audi SG (Centre), Team 8Flo (Far Right)
Accompanied by Fabian in white (Autovox); Wolfgang in red (ABT)

I would hereby like to thank Chris (8Flo), Brinal, Brigid, Fabian (Autovox) especially for the invite! be sure to invite us down for the next!

Till then :D

Tuned Upzz for the Everyday's Compact

It all started with a mere curiousity....

As one gains knowledge and experiences, there is a hunger to want to find out more...

This hunger in turns brought forth the passion....

And that is all how it started..

I am a late starter when it comes to cars. My first foray into the car scene was during my army days, where me and my drivers' buddies would take the military vehicles and go about our nightly patrol duties in the very military base where I spent most of my army time. Our conversation would revolve around cars, and of course our dream of ever owning a car.

My first ride was that of a blue Toyota Vios, a humble, day-to-day family sedan. It was also the very first drawing block where I have experimented installing the various 'so-called' performance goodies and witnessing the effect that the installation had on my car. I was introduced into vehicle modification through reading the local car magazines, and being a newbie, I was naturally excited by the various parts and promises of performances that come with each and every one of them. Needless to say, I have to pay that "learning fee" to satisfy that curiousity of wanting to find out the extent of the effects of the upgrades. Well I have my ups and downs...let's just say I should have done abit more research before committing myself to the advertised products with the promises of increase in horsepower and performance.

Unknowingly I was bitten by the 'mod bug' and infected with the 'mod disease'. The Toyota forum was the next place I came upon and invested my time in it. There I was able to find more dedicated information with regards to my ride and subsequently gain more knowledge on performance tuning for my particular made of vehicle. Still that did not stop me from trying out different products: air intakes, exhaust mufflers, extractors, lightweight pulley, performance clutch, fuel pumps, injectors, suspensions..... I was as unsettled as a rowdy kid, and wasn't able to find the right 'feel' for my ride, even with the different mix-and-match of products. It took me quite a while to realize that information on the forum wasn't a 100% accurate, as the presence of advertisers and product sellers tend to offer biased views towards the products they are selling.

From then on, I did my own researches whenever I have the intention to change something. This I done by matching my hypothesis with the various facts that I could sourced online. From then now, I used my own past experiences as well as my newly acquired knowledge to make a more informed decision with regards to doing tune-ups. Sadly, by the time I realized this, my blue car had already been so seasoned with mileage, damages and wear-and-tear arising from past accidents and use that I have to sell it off.

Thankfully I am able to acquire from a good friend his very own Vios (same made, same model) whom I knew he had taken very very good care since Day 1 on acquiring his car. The best part was however, this car has been sold to me with all the performance parts intact, and mind you, parts that comes from revered tuning houses like HKS, RS*R and JUN. Besides, the car has been tuned by local tuner Speed D, and what a difference it was when compared to my first car! This was exactly the effect that I have craved for so long, and I have never regretted till now.....

The Vios was meant to be a light compact family sedan by its manufacturer Toyota, and the tuning philosophy, in my own opinion, should vastly differed from that of tuning a performance production vehicle like the Mitsubishi Evo or the Subaru Rex. Also to maintain a close degree of street legality would mean that the car should be kept in its naturally aspirated form with its original 1NZFE engine intact. This would mean that there only so much horses that could be extracted keeping to the above constraints. The expectation arising from this tuning philosophy is not to expect stratospheric gain in output but in fact focus on increment in the power-to-weight ratio and possibly firming up the otherwise soft and lacklustre handling of the stock car. Fret not however, as a lightweight compact like the Vios could still be fun to drive after performing some tune upzz! An increment of an estimated 15 horses and 30Nm of torque (with tuning and parts thrown in) would allow the driver to feel a positive difference in performance as compared to the stock car. With a more responsive engine that could pull more strongly across the rpm ranges, the effect on a lightweight car like the Vios could be well manifested.

Some photos of the car, or Speed D 'stock' car, as the tuner calls it:

The vented CF bonnet is the latest in addition to the car. However I would have preferred if the bonnet has been sprayed to the same glossy Mica Black to match the car's color!

See the HKS Silent Hi-Power muffler peeking out from underneath! As it's name goes, it is quite a silent muffler at idle and only gets more audible as the revs climb...

Another original HKS product! The prev owner has left behind the HKS Super Flow Reloaded air filter with HKS stainless steel intake pipe. The pipe adds some chrome to the otherwise dull engine bay!

The car now sports 15'' Prodrive GC10 rims shrouded in sticky Yokohama AD08 tires for improved handling on the streets. Even on the street I would still prefer a negative camber of 1.5 as compared to negative 1.0....

Some Interesting Caricatures off the Web (Part 2)

Moving on here are some other cartoon features of the following cars from Speed Nation. Digg it!

Cant miss out the car from the large round taillamps!
Yes it is the Godzilla in the shade of blue that I would drool for!

The S-series cars from Nissan are well-known among the drifting fraternity for their rear wheel configuration and possibly the turbocharged output of the engines. The one u are seeing is the S14, perhaps the least popular as compared to its S15 and S13 siblings. Nonetheless the car has quite a fanatic fan base worldwide, and is a great platform to start drifting!

The bug-eyed Subaru Impreza WRX
Subaru has been heavily involved in the World Rally Championship and their cars are a reflection its rally involvement. Armed with a highly capable 4WD drivetrain and a turbocharged engine, power and handling remain the forte of Subaru. With a huge list of aftermarket upgrades for the 'Scooby', this is one car which you would have much fun with!

The Nissan Fairlady or the 350z is Nissan's premium sexy looking coupe. With a rigid chassis and a naturally aspirated 3.5L engine, the car is becoming more popular among drifters worldwide. However, the relatively higher cost of the car is possibly one of the reasons for drifters preferring the S-series. To seriously give the engine more shove, forced induction is highly recommended!

Some Interesting Caricatures off the Web (Part 1)

Here's some caricatures taken of the web, 'courtesy' of Speed Nation!

Will start with Toyota first since I am kinda biased towards them.

The Toyota MR-S or more commonly, the MR Spyder.
Sporting a 50-50 config, this is possibly the best handling car made by Toyota in their recent history.
Sadly the production of the MR-S was terminated in 2008, and this brought an end to Toyota's lineage of sports-inspired cars following the demise of the Supra and the Celica.

The MR-S boasts a lightweight chassis and the 1.8ZZ power plant provides enough push to power the little car along. The beauty lies in the car's handling ability, again with its lightweight body and a midship engine configuration. This car would hold its own in a twisty mountain course against other higher output vehicles.

The Hachi-Roku.
Enough said, this is by far one of the most iconic old school drift cars of the 80's. Designed more for transporting people than as a showy drift vehicle, this car surprised many with its ability to drift and decimate the more purposefully built drift cars out there.

The MR2
Gosh I loved those old school flip up headlamps that comes with the car.
Throw in a set of turbocharged 3SGTE engine and rear wheel drive configuration and you will have a hell load of fun in this!

The Cecila
Built as a stylish two-door coupe, the Celica is a front wheel drive vehicle that stylish and whose outlook appearance garners lot of street cred! Forced induction options are always available to provide more oomph to the otherwise naturally aspirated engjne!
The Supra
Need I say more? This is one super car killer.
Equipped with a bulletproof 1JZ or the even more potent 2JZ power plant, a four figure stratospheric output is not unheard of.
Featuring twin turbos from the factory, the twins are normally removed and in their place one single large blower is installed for higher output.
